MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Gretchen Dettlinger's two goals led the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (6-5, 4-1 CC) to a 3-2 win over Mount Olive (4-6-1, 2-2-1) on Thursday afternoon. The win pushes the Falcons back over the .500 mark overall and keeps them one game behind Converse for the regular season crown.
Leticia Patino added her third goal of the season to round out the Pfeiffer scorers. Jocelyn Yurchak and Nichole Poppe scored for Mount Olive.
Each team fired 11 shots in the match, with Pfeiffer leading 6-4 in the shots on goal category. The Falcons also led in corner kicks, taking seven compared to three for the Trojans.
Poppe nearly put the visitors on the board early but the Trojans forward had her shot deflect off the crossbar in the fourth minute. However, Poppe would break through at the 9:35 mark as she dribbled through two defenders and her shot from the corner deflected off Pfeiffer's keeper Blakeney Blair just over the goal line. The goal ignited a fire under the Falcons as Pfeiffer scored three unanswered to end the half. Dettlinger scored her first in the 20th minute and added her second tally in the 32nd minute. With less than five minutes to play in the first half, Brae Buster pulled the keeper out of goal and then fed Patino who put it in the open net.
Mount Olive would cut the lead to one in the 56th minute as Yurchak took a pass in the box and beat Blair. However, the Pfeiffer defense would tighten and not allow another good scoring opportunity the rest of the way.
The Falcons return to action Saturday as they take on the winless North Greenville Crusaders. Action begins at 1 p.m.
