MISENHEIMER, N.C. - On a chilly afternoon, the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (3-4) dropped a tough non-conference battle with UNC Pembroke (5-1-1) by a final score of 1-0. Rae-Shawna Campbell accounted for the lone goal in the match as the Falcons dropped to 1-3 at home on the season.
Campbell put the Braves ahead for good in the 24th minute. Pembroke's Savanna Stiles lofted a corner kick into the box that was deflected back towards her. The sophomore then sent it back into the box and Campbell jumped into the air and headed a shot into the top corner of the net for her sixth score of the season. The rest of the half was played mostly in Pfeiffer's offensive end but the Falcons couldn't find a way to even the score. At the end of the first 45 minutes, Pembroke held a slight 4-3 advantage in shots.
Pfeiffer continued to attack in the second half, but the Braves backline remained stout. Pfeiffer outshot the Braves 7-4 in the second half, but was unable to convert on any of those scoring chances.ÂÂ
Gretchen Dettlinger finished the match with four shots and accounted for Pfeiffer's lone shot on goal.
Courtney Crump fired four shots for the visitors, with two on goal.
Kate Halligan fell to 3-3 on the season as the sophomore made three saves in the contest. UNC Pembroke's Janae Aiken posted her second shutout of the season and improved to 5-1-1.
Pembroke took a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, with Pfeiffer owning a 10-8 lead in shots for the match.
The Braves took last year's meeting between the two teams on Sept. 11 by a final score of 2-1 as Stiles scored with six second remaining to steal the victory. Last year's match up featured a combined 43 shots and eight corner kicks, compared to the defensive battle that was played this season.ÂÂ
The Falcons turn their attention to conference play as they travel to Banner Elk, N.C. to take on Lees-McRae on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
