Falcons Offense Shutdown By Trojans

Quentin M. Reed – Sports Information Graduate Assistant

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C – The Pfeiffer Falcons (4-6-3, 2-3-1 CC) women's soccer team were defeated by the Mount Olive Trojans (5-3-2, 4-1-2 CC) 4-0 in Conference Carolinas match-up on Wednesday night.

Mount Olive got on the board first in the 17th minute the Trojans sent a pass across the field, but it looked like Falcon Stephanie Hardig was going to be able to intercept the pass. Ellie Barnes took control of the ball and dribbled by Hardig before her shot found the back of the net.

Five minutes later Pfeiffer keeper Deidre Gilley made a nice save as she deflected a Nichole Poppe shot over the cross bar to keep the score at 1-0.

In the 30th minute, Brae Buster sent a cross into Aaliyah Jackson but the ball skipped by Jackson's feet.

The Falcons had another chance in the 40th minute when they sent another cross to Jackson. This time she controlled the pass and got a shot on goal but it was saved by Trojan goalkeeper Stephanie McCoy.

In the 68th minute an Alex Wetherholt pass set up a Nichole Poppe goal.

Down by two goals, the Falcons hopes were waning but they continued their attack on goal.

In the 82nd minute, Jackson took another Falcon pass in the Mount Olive goal box but, McCoy knocked it away before the senior forward was able to get off a shot on goal.

Four minutes later, Macy Rutledge took a shot off of a cross but kicked it high over the crossbar.

The Falcons last hope to get on the scoreboard happened in the 89th minute when Katlyn Stevens took Pfeiffer's ninth corner kick and found the feet of Buster. Buster put a shot on goal but Trojan goalkeeper was there again for the save.

The Trojans added two late goals in the last two minutes as Poppe and Barnes got their second goals of the game.

Gilley on the evening saw 12 shots on goal, while tallying eight saves.

Pfeiffer returns to action Saturday October 10th as they host Belmont Abbey for a Conference Carolinas match at 5 p.m. for Senior Day.
