MISENHEIMER, N.C. - For the second straight game, the Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (2-0) pulled out a one-goal victory and also for the second time this year it was Derek Thomas that scored the winner. Thomas' goal 51 seconds into overtime lifted the Falcons to an 11-10 win over Mars Hill (0-1) in Pfeiffer's home opener.

Mars Hill had a chance to win the game in regulation as the Lions possessed the ball and held for the final shot of the 4th quarter in the 10-10 tie. However, Ryan Sage turned the ball over and Jimmy McBride was charged with a slashing penalty as the quarter expired. In a matter of seconds, the Falcons went from a possible loss to being a man-up heading into OT.

Thomas, who scored the game-winner against No. 10 Florida Southern last Saturday, would convert the extra man opportunity and lift the Falcons to victory.

Aside from Thomas, Mike Triolo was the other offensive star for the Falcons as the attackmen registered three goals and one assist on the day. Thomas finished with three points as he also handed out two assists and Cole Paciejewski had two goals. Eddie Renaud (2 g, 1 a) and Kyle Pauwels (1 g, 1 a) were also instrumental in the victory.

On the defensive side, Thomas caused three turnovers and Pauwels along with Kevin Kerrick forced two. Matt Michaeli had six ground balls, which led the Falcons.

Joe Capstaff played the first half in goal for Pfeiffer, allowing six goals and making four saves. Capstaff gave way to Michael Moorehead for the second half and overtime period and Moorehead made nine saves, including a couple crucial saves down the stretch, to earn his first career victory.

Anthony Malcolm of Mars Hill led all players with four goals and seven ground balls. Sage added three goals and an assist, while Brian Pieklik had two goals and an assist. Jack Grinewich played all 60:51 in net and made 16 saves to drop to 0-1.

With Pfeiffer trailing 2-1, Triolo scored two goals in a 16 second span to push Pfeiffer ahead 3-2. The first quarter would end with the game tied at three.

Mars Hill scored the first two of the second quarter before the Falcons rallied for four straight. The Lions scored the last goal of the half to cut the lead to 7-6 going into the break.

The Lions evened the game at the 10:38 mark of the 3rd quarter but Pfeiffer answered with three straight. Trailing 10-7 with 11 minutes to play, Mars Hill mounted a comeback to tie the game at 10 with 1:48 to play. However, it was Thomas who would net the winner and give the Falcons a hard earned W.

Pfeiffer returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Queens at 1 p.m.
