CORNELIUS, N.C. - Robert Nelson recorded the second most ground balls (15) in a single game in school history, leading the Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (5-2, 2-0 CC) to a 19-7 Conference Carolinas victory over Emmanuel (1-6, 0-2). Nelson dominated the face off all afternoon, winning 24-of-29 for the Falcons.
Eddie Renaud who entered the game fourth in the nation in points per game, added seven points on five goals and two assists. The Falcon offense came into the day ranked fourth in Division II with 15.33 goals per game and improved upon that number with today's outburst.
Kyle Pauwels and Cole Paciejewski each finished with three goals for the game. Senior Mike Triolo had two goals and three assists on the day.
Pfeiffer blew the game open from the beginning as the Falcons scored the first nine goals of the contest. Renaud and Paciejewski each scored twice in the opening quarter and Matt Michaeli's goal at the 11:06 mark of the second quarter put Pfeiffer up 9-0.
The Lions had a little fight in them as they answered with four straight to end the half. Emmanuel converted on three straight man advantage opportunities and went into the half trailing 9-4.
Austin Brundage cut the gap to 9-5 for Emmanuel just 1:04 into the third quarter but Pfeiffer dominated the rest of the contest, outscoring the Lions 10-2 over the final 26:04.
For the game, Pfeiffer held a 45-25 advantage in ground balls and out shot Emmanuel 57-32. Thanks to Nelson's big day, Pfeiffer won 24 of 30 face-off's on the day.
Emmanuel went a perfect 4-for-4 with the man advantage and Pfeiffer countered with a 4-for-7 showing. Joe Capstaff made five saves to improve to 3-1 on the season, before giving way to Michael Moorehead for the second half. Moorehead allowed three goals and made seven saves.
Alan Troutman made 18 saves for the Lions in the losing effort.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Wednesday afternoon as they host Saint Leo in non-conference action. The game is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at NE Lefko Field.
