MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Pfeiffer men's lacrosse team (6-2) led from start to finish against Saint Leo (4-4) as the Falcons came away with an 11-9 victory. Eddie Renaud, Mike Triolo and Cole Sheen all had two goals for Pfeiffer who improves to 5-0 at home on the season.
Triolo drew first blood at the 12:44 mark of the first quarter as the Falcons remained lethal with the man advantage. Pfeiffer entered play tops in the nation in extra man offense and Triolo added another tally with the Falcons up a man. Matt Michaeli added a goal and Renaud scored twice in the opening quarter as the period ended with Pfeiffer holding a 4-2 advantage.
The defense's tightened in the second quarter as only three goals were scored. Tucker Hammock notched his first of the contest to put Pfeiffer up three but the Lions answered less than two minutes later, pulling back within two. As the period headed to a close, Sheen fired a shot that was saved but Triolo corralled the rebound and shot in one motion to score with just 1.5 seconds on the clock. The half would end with Pfeiffer up 6-3.
Ben Austin and Kyle Pauwels increased the Pfeiffer lead to 8-3 but the Lions would answer with four consecutive goals. With his team leading 8-7, Sheen struck for back-to-back goals to give Pfeiffer a three goal cushion. Saint Leo would score two of the final three goals in the contest but would be unable to pull closer than two goals.
For the game, the Lions held a slim 40-38 advantage in shots and won 13 of 23 face offs. Pfeiffer went 1-for-2 with the extra man and held Saint Leo to just 1-for-6 with the extra man.
Joe Capstaff started and played the first 30 minutes in net to earn the win. The senior made six saves and allowed just three goals before giving way to Michael Moorehead for the second half. Moorehead made seven stops and allowed six goals.
Michaeli led the Falcons with four ground balls and David Lehman caused two turnovers on the defensive end.
The Lions also had three players score two goals. Sean Connolly recorded four ground balls and Tyler Vadas forced two turnovers. Dave Moore fell to 4-4 in goal, making nine saves and allowing 11 goals.
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday as they host Lenoir-Rhyne in an important non-conference tilt. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
