MISENHEIMER, NC- Aryana Harvey found the back of the net on a penalty kick just 1:22 into the first overtime to give the Pfeiffer women's soccer (5-4-1, 4-1 CC) team a 1-0 victory over Mount Olive (4-4-1, 2-3-1 CC) on Wednesday night. The win keeps Pfeiffer in a second place tie in the conference standings.
After finishing regulation scoreless, the Falcons were awarded a penalty shot at the beginning of overtime. Following a handball by the Trojans in the box, Harvey was able to beat the UMO keeper Abigail Ross, with a game winner for her fourth goal of the season.
Pfeiffer held a dominating 23-6 advantage in shots on the evening but had trouble finishing their opportunities. Pfeiffer took five corner kicks on the night, compared to a pair for the visitors. Hailey Havelind, Jennifer Baity and Brae Buster each registered four shots in the match.
The Falcons and Trojans went into half scoreless, despite Pfeiffer owning a 14-3 shot advantage. The Falcons best shot came off the foot of Buster with three minutes left in the period. However, the shot fell a little wide of the net and the match remained scoreless. UMO keeper Abigail Ross posted four saves in the opening half.
It was more of the same in the second half. Pfeiffer outshot the Trojans 8-4, however neither team was able to find the back of the net. Kaley Hyatt picked up two big saves in the period to keep the match scoreless.
This was the first meeting of these two programs since the Falcons ended Mount Olive's 2015 campaign with a 3-0 victory in the Conference Carolinas Tournament Quarterfinal.
Pfeiffer returns to action on Saturday as they travel to North Greenville for a 1 p.m. match.
