MISENHEIMER, N.C. - In their second home match of the season, the Pfeiffer women's soccer team (1-2-1) dropped a 1-0 decision in non-conference action against UNC Pembroke (1-2) on Wednesday evening.
There was plenty of action in the opening half but the match was stopped with 21 minutes to go as a UNC Pembroke player suffered an injury. As play was restarted, Macy Rutledge lofted a corner kick into the box that deflected off the goalkeepers hands and across the goal line. However, the referee ruled a Falcon player contacted the keeper and the goal was taken off the board.
Freshman goalkeeper Kaley Hyatt, fresh off a 13 save performance against Young Harris on Friday, made six big saves in the opening half. The toughest save came on an open look by the Braves that saw Hyatt make a sliding kick save to keep UNCP off the board. The Braves also had a goal called off due to an offsides call as the frame ended scoreless.
In the 70th minute, the Braves broke the draw as Mackenzie Wright sent a corner kick into the box that found the head of teammate Kristina Stevenson. The shot went just over the hands of Hyatt and gave the visitors the lead.
Senior Brae Buster, sophomore Ryanna Hammond and freshman Aryana Harvey each fired two shots in the match. Hyatt finished the contest with nine saves.
For the night, Pembroke held a 23-9 advantage in shots and Pembroke had a 10-2 lead in corner kicks.
The Falcons return to action on Saturday as they open Conference Carolinas action with a 5 p.m. match against Southern Wesleyan. Last season, Pfeiffer defeated SWU 3-0 thanks to a hat trick from Aaliyah Jackson. The Falcons are 2-0 all-time against the Warriors.
